Budapest, Prague, I am a Tourist

I have met and had conversations with hundreds of new fellow traveling friends over the past six months. The conversations usually start with questions about where you are from and where you have traveled. The most common thing that people say when discussing places they have visited is, for example: β€œI was surprised that Prague had so many tourists.” or “Budapest is very touristy.” They say it with a negative tone. Then I reply, “What are you? You a tourist too, right?” I am definitely a tourist. We are all tourists. I get annoyed when people use that word in such a negative way. So, the other day I decided to change the way I describe things…

I understand what people are talking about when they use the word “tourist” as an insult. They are basically describing people that wander through a city with no respect for anything, throwing their trash on the ground, running over your foot with their Segway, complaining that no one speaks English, stabbing you with their selfie-stick as they hold up traffic because they have no awareness that there are thousands of other people trying to walk down that same beautiful street. A lot of people seem to act different than they would act in their home country or city. Those people are assholes. So, I have begun to correct my new tourist friends to say: “I was surprised thatΒ Prague had so many assholes.” and “Budapest is very assholey.” Isn’t that more accurate/fun? With that said, I enjoyed my time in these beautiful, popular cities. These were the ultimate urban hiking cities, with plenty to see and plenty of ways to avoid the summer crowds. All you have to do is act like a proper tourist and avoid the assholes.

What about “asshole tourists”? If you say just assholes then it would seem you are saying the actual inhabitants are assholes. Yes? No?
Have fun you nice, respectful tourist!! πŸ™‚

Yes and no. I guess anyone can be an asshole, unlike you. πŸ™‚

Nothing worse than an assholey town, but I’m glad you’re finding the hidden gems.
