Storage is the New Freedom

Welp, my “stuff” has come full circle. In March 2013 I ended up with half of a HUGE house in a storage unit, check it out:

So much extra stuff!  These pictures inspired one of my friends to coin the phrase: “Storage is the new baggage!”  Little shit.

So, after a year of realizing that I didn’t need or even know what I had in there, this happened:

Selling things on craigslist became my second career, Goodwill received all of my precious CDs and VHS tapes and friends got great deals on lawn equipment.  Yes, I even sold my collection of ladders, rakes and buckets!

This purging and minimizing process changed the way I think about everything in my life.  Like I said in one of my first posts, that is why I chose this blog name.  It turns out that there were a lot of benefits to this lifestyle change: I started eating healthier, saving more money, I sold my TV and started reading books (what??!?) and I created a plan to realize this dream of traveling the world.

Last week I packed up everything I own into a 7ft x 10ft storage unit and two backpacks.  I’ll post soon about what I brought in my backpacks.  This time I am storing stuff that I will use when I come back.  Or, maybe this is another exercise to realize that I don’t even need half of this stuff:

So much stuff!

Now I am in Australia not thinking about my stuff and trying to limit myself to one “long black coffee” as I post this.  What can you simplify in your life?  Thanks for sharing this adventure with me!

Whoa, Anthony, this is so great! And, I can not believe you are the same Anthony I knew in office, I mean, you are the perfect colleague, but I never realized you have such great dream and best of all, you are realizing it.
